Create useful rulers from your tool handles. You can convert any large handle tool, such as a hoe, shovel, or rake into a measuring tool. Just run some measuring tape right on the floor next to the handles. Have a marker handy, and mark the distance with it. Now, every time you work in your garden, you are going to have a powerful ruler at the touch of your fingertips.
To maximize the benefits of compost, put it in your garden about two weeks before you plant. Compost actually needs time to integrate with soil and once you combine the two they need time to stabilize. Plan to gather enough compost to fertilize your garden a couple of weeks ahead of planting to produce healthier and stronger plants.
A key element to having a great garden is to fence it in. In many areas the wildlife will consume the fruits and vegetables as soon as they sprout, yielding little or no harvest. A good fence will not only keep out the wildlife, but it will keep out the neighborhood children from playing ball and pets from digging.
Are you wondering if you need to water your lawn? One good way to tell is to simply walk across it. If you can see your footprints, you have a thirsty yard. Every week, your lawn should be receiving up to one inch of water. If you live in an area where it doesn't rain frequently, make sure to give your lawn the "footprint test" whenever you're not sure if it's had enough to drink.
If you are an experienced gardener, but tend to use only your same trusted tools, you may be surprised to find some new innovations that you will soon, not be able to live without. Seasoned gardeners will be unable to deny the attraction of some of these latest gadgets.
